Islands display unity on renewable energy

GUERNSEY and Alderney are keen to work with their Channel Island neighbours to harness the potential of marine renewable energy, representatives have said.
A willingness to share ‘common interests and ideas’ was expressed following the second political summit held by the Channel Island Marine Renewable Energy Forum in Jersey yesterday.
Paul Arditti, who is chairman of the Policy Committee for Alderney, hailed the island being welcomed as a new signatory to a joint statement of intent, which was originally signed in February last year.
Mr Arditti, pictured, said he left the conference with a sense of unity between the islands and willingness to work together on regulatory framework and other renewable energy matters – without competition.

Unity between the islands on renewable energy is a start but surely the islands are at the mercy of the energy giants like EDF. We might be able to generate our own power in future but isn’t the idea to export the surplus energy? We should be talking to France, they are the ones with access to the closest grid and they have knowhow and resources. We seem to be going off our own tangent without including our most important and closest neighbour.
