Public Services in move to take over rubbish collection

PUBLIC Services will look to centralise black bag collections, its minister has confirmed.

However Deputy Paul Luxon, pictured, who said the department would begin consulting with parish officials specifically on the issue from Monday, stressed that no decisions had been made over the future of non-recyclable waste collection.

‘It will be for each parish as a douzaine rather than individual members to respond to and help formulate a view,’ he said.

It follows the department’s update on its waste strategy to douzaines and deputies, which indicated that it would look to trial a kerbside recycling scheme for 55% of the island population in St Sampson’s, St Peter Port and St Martin’s by the end of this year.

Leave well alone and stop meddling. We currently receive an excellent service and ‘nationalisation’ usually leads to inefficiencies, industrial action, increased costs and more bureaucracy.
There is no waste strategy and our useless politicians have taken over fifteen years to decide precisely nothing.

At last. Someone with a bit of sense. The ratepayers in St Sampsons have been well and truly stuffed over with the waste deal we have to pay for. Centralise it and get the best deal islandwide.

I don’t understand the naysayers on here. Why negotiate several different rubbish collection contracts for such a small space? Just have one contract negotiated centrally, paid centrally and be done with it.

Please don’t “rubish” a system that has been working well for many, many, years. Leave what isn’t broken, alone

In my opinion it doesn’t work. I am disgusted with the deal made in St Sampsons and can’t wait for waste to be centralised so it can be done in a sensible manner.

Leave collections to the present contractors. They know their round, customers, amount of bags collected and minimum amout of fuss.

To centralise it to a states body would mean an increased public spending purse
