Cemetery restorers can get back to work

VOLUNTEERS whose work to restore a historic Town cemetery was put on hold can pick up their tools again after permission to disturb the consecrated ground was granted.
However, the group renovating the Rue des Freres site have been warned by parish constable Dennis Le Moignan that substandard alterations would be ‘sacrilegious’.
Their application to the Ecclesiastical Court to continue their efforts, led by States archaeologist Phil de Jersey, pictured, was approved yesterday.
However the Dean, the Very Rev. Canon Paul Mellor, said the condition of the approval was that the group had to work in partnership with parish officials – who had originally planned to turn the area into a park until objections from the volunteers – and consult all stakeholders.
