Residents evacuate while bomb teams remove mine
Sunday 18th August 2013, 1:52PM BST.
RESIDENTS were evacuated today as early-morning exclusion zones came into force to allow disposal experts to remove a Second World War mine from their doorsteps.
The bomb, discovered in Bluebell Wood, was being transported by police and navy experts to Fermain Bay from where it would be taken out to sea and later detonated.
As a precautionary measure property owners in the Fermain Road area were advised to vacate their homes by 6am, with occupants on the other routes asked to do so by 8am.
A temporary rest centre was set up in St Martin’s at the Professor Shaw Community Centre, where Salvation Army volunteers served refreshments.
Several residents and businesses in the area however chose to stay put. It was expected most people could return home by midday.
