Ward’s 10-month closure costs HSSD £1m. in lost private income

HSSD will have missed out on £1m. in lost private patient income as a result of the 10-month closure of De Saumarez Ward, figures released by the department have revealed.
And 128 operations have been postponed due to continued disruption in the last six months.
The department indicated the loss in its response to a series of questions from former minister Hunter Adam, including how closures had damaged private patient income in the Victoria Wing.
‘Four beds in Victoria Wing are routinely used for gynaecology patients. At present, only four more beds are used for private patients and another eight are used for non-private surgical patients who cannot be accommodated in other wards,’ replied current minister Mark Dorey.
‘HSSD presently estimates that around £100,000 per month in private patient income could be generated if these beds were returned to private use.’
