Syria needs urgent help – Overseas Aid
Saturday 31st August 2013, 9:22AM BST.
PROVIDING aid for the innocent people of Syria must be a priority following the ‘heart-rending’ attacks, the Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission has said.
Vice chairman Tim Peet said the commissioners had been following with sadness the ongoing attacks on innocent civilians and the huge refugee burden on neighbouring countries.
‘I think it heart-rending what is going on there,’ he said.
‘How can people do that to each other.
‘The real people who are suffering are the civilian population of Syria and there is a huge burden being put on surrounding countries.
‘We have seen the pictures and videos of the gas attacks and the rows of bodies.
‘Just yesterday there was a Napalm-style attack on a school.
‘This is happening all the time and aid is crucial.’
The commission recently decided to make another donation of £25,000 to the Disaster Emergency Committee Syria Appeal.
It is the third such donation to come from the commission’s disaster emergency relief budget to help aid agencies who are working in Syria and neighbouring countries.
