DEPUTY BARRY BREHAUT and his 12-year-old son Etienne watched in horror as a fire in a French cornfield raged out of control and destroyed 64 cars.
They were at a bikers’ stunt event at Kerniniven airport near Pontivy, in central Brittany, when they noticed smoke coming from a field close to an improvised car park.
‘It was unbelievable how fast the fire spread,’ said Deputy Brehaut.
‘We tried to beat it out with branches but it was impossible. Then we shouted in the direction of the airport hoping that firemen would come, but by the time help arrived it was too late and the first cars were on fire.’
