Residents kick up a stink over sewage smell

PEOPLE living in the Grand Bouet are concerned for their health because of the smell and noise they claim is coming from the new Belle Greve sewage plant.
Some who lived in the area before the plant was installed said there was an issue with the smell before, but it was worse now as it was combined with the noise.
But Guernsey Water, which paid £11m. for the project, said that it has received very few complaints and it had investigated those.
Clos du Marais residents’ homes are very close to the plant.
Alice Fairbrother, 24, and daughter Lainee, 17 months, pictured, have lived in the clos for 10 months.
Her garden backs on to the plant and she said she heard rattling noises.
‘If the wind is a certain way the smell is revolting,’ she said. ‘It can’t be good for you.
‘There is a pit which can be open and closed [at the treatment plant] and if it is open it stinks the whole house out. We also have a lot of flies.’
A Guernsey Water spokesman said it was surprised to hear about the odour issue. ‘Any problem being experienced appears to be sporadic and transient in nature. To date, no specific source has been identified.’
