Ice rink won’t return – ‘a few ruining it for the many’, says organiser

A ‘GREEN-eyed monster’ attitude towards the Christmas ice rink by local businesses means the popular event will not return to Guernsey, its organiser has said.
However Sonia Taylor, a spokeswoman for McAulay, the leaseholder of the Market Street buildings, said her company invested thousands to support the rink, which she said had grown too big for the area.
Ice Skate Guernsey project manager James Evans thanked all those who supported the event, saying the decision not to return had not been taken lightly.
He said there had been a classic case of ‘a few ruining it for the many.’
Mrs Taylor said businesses in the area had lost trade because of the event. She added that the late announcement that the rink would be returning last year had not given retailers enough time to plan for the event.
