New slaughterhouse bit of a pig’s ear – farmer

FARMERS have expressed deep concern about Guernsey’s new £1.7m. slaughterhouse, with one describing it as a ‘bit of a pig’s ear’.
A number of early issues have been reported at the Longue Hougue site.
In one instance, the department confirmed it was forced to close the slaughterhouse for 24 hours because drains were not running properly.
Cattle and sheep farmer Ben Wallace has not been impressed.
‘To say it’s a brand new facility built from scratch and they’ve consulted with experts, it’s not had a very good start,’ he said. ‘The lairage [holding pens] isn’t as big as we hoped, there isn’t really enough room – it’s a bit of a pig’s ear.’
Commerce and Employment said it was not aware of any issues regarding vehicular access and currently there were no known connection issues with the complex system of drains at the site.
