Support for Bulwer Avenue lights to remain

RESIDENTS and businesses have welcomed a move to make the traffic lights in Bulwer Avenue permanent.
Public Services said it had submitted a planning application to retain the lights, following a request from Environment.
The lights met opposition when they were first installed so that Longue Hougue could be used as a temporary storage area for aggregate during airport work. But residents have since credited them for reducing speeding traffic.
Doric Sarre, 70, who runs his family insurance broker business from home, said the lights had helped slow down motorists travelling at double the speed limit.
‘I do feel they may well have had a calming effect on people tempted to speed from one end to the other,’ he said.
‘It is noticeable that there is not as much speeding going up and down now. It doesn’t even cause more traffic congestion. I would say it would have eased it if anything.’
