Island’s calendar a page-turner

The Olympic rings, one of several themes.

THIS year’s Herm school calendar has several themes – and as always they are delivered with energy, enthusiasm and more than a little drama.

The first is the colours of the Olympic rings. Black is for blackberries, namely blackberry jam, in which the children were liberally smeared. Yellow is ice cream and sunshine – both very Herm-like subjects. Blue is for water and the Titanic. Red is blood and Macbeth. And green is gardening and being eco-friendly.

To tie in with this theme’s work on the Titanic story, one picture sees Elliot Knight and Eden Latter recreating Leonardo and Kate’s famous figurehead scene from the film. With no cruise ships handy, it meant the children enjoyed a quick trip around the islands on Little Herm, before the photo was taken with the help of Herm director – and safety monitor for the trip – Simon George.

There is also a continuation of previous work on Victorian literature with the stories of Oscar Wilde. In the picture of The Selfish Giant, clever photography makes little Brandon Hastings appear huge.

Wilde’s The Happy Prince inspired a beautiful picture. Snow-covered hills surround the children in Victorian dress, with India Waterhouse as the tiny bird and the Antony Gormley statue making a cameo as the statue of the prince.

The pictures were taken by teacher Mary Carey and digitally enhanced by Jack Le Tocq of Colour Monster.

The calendars will be available within the next few weeks and can be bought from the Herm school or the island gift shops.

Much work was put into the school’s Titanic exhibition. Islanders were all invited to look at the work and hear interesting stories about real-life passengers.

The children made replicas of recovered objects and were able to research stories of passengers with names similar to their own.

A second showing of talks and artefacts took place at Vauvert Primary School.

The project tied in with several subjects, including creative writing, art, history and science, making it accessible to every age group within the school.
