SCHOOLGIRL Morgan Jones has raised £86 for the GSPCA.

Eleven-year-old Morgan, who is the head girl at Herm Primary School, saw the busy half-term as a perfect opportunity to raise some extra cash.

Her dad, Tom, runs the Mermaid Tavern, and in his five years there had accumulated a huge amount of unclaimed lost property. In addition to this, Morgan cleared out her bedroom and got together all her unwanted bags, books and CDs – all of which she decided to sell.

‘In the holidays, my dad mentioned how much lost property there was, and that we would only get loads more,’ said Morgan. ‘So we thought this would be the best way to make use of it.’

A little makeshift stall was put up just inside the pub doors, where it couldn’t be missed by passers-by. Morgan – helped during the day by visiting children and in the evening by island friends – spent around 10 hours collecting donations.

Among the items on offer were costume jewellery, toys and around 40 pairs of sunglasses, including Calvin Kleins and Ray-Bans.

For a suggested donation of £1 for jewellery and £2 for sunglasses, the collection box quickly filled up. There was even a huge beach tent that had been abandoned in the courtyard, which raised £5.

Animal-lover Morgan knew immediately where she wanted the money to go. She is familiar with the GSPCA, having had pets from it in the past, and she knows the good work it does.

‘I absolutely adore animals,’ she said. ‘I think that by donating to the rescue centre, the animals have a good chance of living a nice life.

‘They have as much right to that as humans do.’

Morgan’s mum, Rachel, will take her to visit the rescue centre to donate the money in person.
