A SARK apartment was badly damaged by fire in the early hours of yesterday, but the occupants escaped without injury.

Sark Fire and Rescue Service was called to an apartment block near La Moinerie Hotel shortly before 1am and had the fire out within 35 minutes.

All four flats in the block were evacuated and the occupants spent the remainder of the night at the Aval du Creux Hotel.

Sark fire chief Kevin Adams said later that it was unclear what caused the blaze, but added that there was quite severe damage to what was thought to be the centre of the fire.

Well, thankfully no one needed any medivac services in this instance. However, that debate still rages in “other places” so I have been doing some research.

There is a perfect E/W location for a 2000 ft airstrip – capable of handling the ambulance aircraft, as well as Islanders for tourist traffic

All that is needed is the demolition of an existing eyesore and a bit of ground levelling – using the techniques and machinery readily available to SEM. In fact, granite blocks reclaimed from the demolition would make ideal foundations for the bridge from Brecqhou to Sark…. you know it makes sense!
