The number of people dying with Clostridium difficile (C diff) or MRSA is continuing to fall.
Last year there were 1,646 deaths involving C diff in England and Wales, down 407 on the 2011 figure of 2,053 deaths.
Deaths involving C diff accounted for 0.8% of all hospital deaths from 2010 to 2012 compared with 2% from 2007 to 2009, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.
MRSA deaths also continue to drop, from 364 in 2011 to 292 in 2012 – a 20% fall.
Some 38 patients (13%) had MRSA recorded as their underlying cause of death.
Between 2009 and 2012, MRSA was involved in 0.1% of all deaths and 0.2% of hospital deaths.
