Shamed GP Delport to be sentenced
Monday 9th September 2013, 3:10AM BST.
A shamed family doctor who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a string of patients and taking intimate pictures at his GP practice is due to be sentenced.
Detectives said Dr Barend Delport, 55, was responsible for “an appalling and gross breach of trust” of patients who had placed faith in him.
He was arrested after the mother of one patient, who was concerned at the treatment they had received in Swanley, Kent, called police in May last year.
It then emerged that Delport had taken intimate pictures of the patient who had visited him complaining of a stomach ache, Kent Police said.
Senior health professionals were consulted about the images and they agreed that they served no clinical purpose for Delport.
Following his arrest at his former home in Eynsford Rise, Eynsford, more than 500,000 images were found on the doctor’s computer.
They included indecent ones he had downloaded online as well as ones taken during medical examinations of both adults and children at the surgery.
Photographic consent forms were also seized where patients had agreed to being photographed during their examinations.
Police said Delport had falsely claimed to the patients that the images would be used for ”training purposes” or because their case was “the worst he had ever seen”.
At Maidstone Crown Court last month, Delport admitted 26 offences, including four of indecent assaults on adults and three indecent assaults on children, police said.
He also pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing indecent images of children, five of making indecent images of children and 12 of taking indecent images of children.
Detective Chief Inspector David Chewter, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said following conviction: “Barend Delport’s behaviour was an appalling and gross breach of the trust that patients, some of whom were vulnerable, had placed in him as a general practitioner.
“Delport didn’t discriminate when it came to his victims, who were of all ages.”
Dr James Thallon, Kent and Medway medical director at NHS England, said: “NHS England is committed to protecting the safety and welfare of all patients and is appalled by the behaviour of Dr Delport.
“In committing these crimes, Dr Delport has completely abused the respect and trust of patients in his care.”
Delport will be sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court from 10.30am.
