THERE is an excitement in Jordan Reynolds’ tone as he talks of the potential Guernsey could soon realise.

Last weekend’s first break of the rugby season has not only helped established first-teamers recover fitness, but it has also seen another new arrival.

With a couple more additions imminent, the player-coach acknowledged that from recently scratching around for an 18-man squad, he is on the verge of a virtual embarrassment of riches.

Forward Sam Stevens has already made a try-scoring debut, his fellow New Zealander Malcolm Barnes will make his first start tomorrow at Dover and Luke Sayer is set to join the ranks from England next week.

Is that the potential Guernsey could realise as an island promoting the sport or is that the potential Guernsey RFC could realise once they have replaced every single locally born player with New Zealander’s, South African’s and Australian’s, all on short term housing licences? You really have to feel for the likes of Dave Harvey, who having cemented his place in the team with consistently good performances, is dropped from the squad completely as soon as another New Zealander lands at the airport.

A sad state of affairs indeed and one that is of absolutely no benefit to island rugby as a whole and the development of the sport locally.
