To kick off the Guernsey Sports Commission’s ‘Developing the Winning Edge’ coaching conference, Guernsey’s three-time world touring car champion Andy Priaulx gave a fascinating insight into the secrets of his success. Rob Batiste was among a captivated audience…
DEVELOPING a winning edge was the theme of the weekend and if any island sportsman is expert on the subject, it has to be Andy Priaulx.
The motor racing driver has been beating the clock or edging ahead of rival karts, motocross bikes and racing cars for the best part of 30 years.
His appearance on the opening evening of the three-day Guernsey Sports Commission coaching conference set the bar high for the weekend.
Priaulx oozed class and confidence, as did the compere for the night, Paul Montague, who fired questions at the racing legend with the aplomb of his sister Sarah, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
It proved a revealing and rewarding 45 minutes for the coaches in the audience at the Performing Arts Centre, who heard the driver, 40 next year, talk in depth of the state of ‘mindfulness’ and how you should prepare for a race ‘as if you are going to go into a fight’.
