GLYN SMITH had one solitary win over Alderney to show from his senior four Muratti caps back in the Eighties.

But the managing director of the Insurance Corporation, who yesterday announced a three-year deal to sponsor the most famous football competition in the Channel Islands, admits he would like to see the Greens gain some Muratti success during his company’s link with the 107-year-old competition.

‘I don’t want to be seen to be favouring one over another, but of course it would be nice [to see Guernsey win],’ said the current Bels first team coach, who was capped at schoolboy, junior and senior Muratti level.

‘As we are in both islands this is a pan-island opportunity which puts something back into the community.

‘I suppose, likewise, while GFC is developing into something very worthwhile, the Muratti remains significant and part of our culture and we want to keep it that way.’
