THE Irish eyes were not smiling any longer, more like weeping, as professional Michael Durcan blew his chance of becoming the maiden winner of the Ravenscroft Guernsey Open matchplay.
Dave Jeffery came from behind deep into their semi-final at La Grande Mare last evening to beat Durcan 2 and 1 and set up a repeat of the island championship final from early May.
This was a night when La Grande Mare’s top two performers showed their mettle.
And while Jeffery scraped through, Wasif Anees came close to forcing pre-tournament favourite James Hamon down an extra hole.
But eventually Hamon rolled in a three-footer for a half in par fives on the last to finally see off the home man.
