Rovers top of the Priaulx League

ROVERS sit proudly at the top of the FNB Priaulx League table following their 2-0 win over St Martin’s at Blanche Pierre Lane last night.
An own goal by goalkeeper Danny Jukes and a second from Jack Batiste, which again had home followers glaring at their keeper, sewed up the points for this hardworking and tight Rovers unit, a few of who celebrated as if they had won the league at the end.
That they won was largely down to the excellence their own No. 1, newcomer Tom Newbold.
He made a string of top saves, invariably to deny Saints skipper Ryan Tippett whose miserable evening concluded with a calf pull which may well put him out of action for quite a while.
Meanwhile, a purposeful second-half display saw North to a much-needed home win.
Having fallen behind to Danny Watts’ fifth-minute screamer, the home side were in danger of dropping more points at an early stage of their anticipated Priaulx League title challenge at Northfield.
However, having managed to draw level by half-time through Simon Tostevin, William Woodford’s men showed far more intent after the interval and, inspired by the excellent Jonny Veron, they claimed all three points against an energetic Sylvans side.
Veron’s fine individual effort gave North the lead, which was added to by Danny Hale and Naro Zimmerman before Kris Moherndl netted a late second for Sylvans.
