Double home success in Granite Man

JAMES TRAVERS and Dave Crosland took the honours in the end-of-season feature triathlon event, the Granite Man Half-Iron and sprint races.
A strong Guernsey squad, together with competitors from around Europe and Jersey, tackled either the 70.3-mile Half-Iron comprising a 1.9km swim, 56-mile bike ride and half marathon, or the sprint event comprising 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.
The mass swim start at Pembroke was a spectacle in itself, with all competitors lined up at 7am and 25 safety kayakers in place.
Despite triathlon usually being a summer sport, this tranquil scene was soon forgotten when the heavens opened.
Jersey’s Tom Perchard, fancied to win in some quarters, was first out of the water with James Travers some four minutes down.
However, with Perchard slowing due to the rain, Travers caught him after the 56-mile bike and dominated the remainder of the race and Perchard dropped out.
Travers dug in deep to marginally stretch his lead over the half-marathon and take the highly coveted title of Granite Man in a time of 4hrs 25min. 5sec.
