Weston takes 5,000m honours
Monday 16th September 2013, 1:30PM BST.
RICK WESTON led from start to finish to win the top race at the inaugural and highly successful GIAAC 5000m track festival at Footes Lane.
Upwards of 80 came to the start line over three races but nobody could quite match the holidaying Serpentine AC runner, although the exciting local youngster, Danny Ray, did just that for much of the 12-and-a-half laps.
Remarkably, within five minutes of taking the top honours over 5000m in a time of 15min. 37.88sec., Weston was back on the track to run an 800m race and clock 2-13 behind winner Matt Loveridge.
Conditions were far from perfect and by the time the excellent and enduring Nikki Neal had won the B race to conclude the night’s affairs, there was driving rain.
But nobody seemed particularly deterred, not least this remarkable veteran mother of four, whose time of 18-21.35 lifts her into the top three all-time Guernsey female runners over the distance, surpassing Martine Scholes.
The only two women faster than Neal, Sarah Mercier and Louise Perrio, were among the large mixed field for the sub 18min. race and it was Mercier, the athlete of the year, who again came out on top.
