FA Trophy hopes ended

GUERNSEY FC’s cup hopes are over for the season after they were knocked out of the FA Trophy at the first qualifying round stage at Footes Lane on Saturday.
The Green Lions lost out 2-1 to Billericay Town from the Ryman Premier, goals from Glenn Poole and Joe Benjamin enough to better Ross Allen’s strike.
One interested spectator was Sir Bradley Wiggins, who was at the game as a guest of GFC during his weekend visit to the island.
The defeat means that GFC can now focus on their Ryman South league campaign for the remainder of the season, with manager Tony Vance rueing certain moments.
‘I thought that in the first half we had a chance to really get ourselves into the game and were perhaps undone a bit by a bit of eagerness to win the ball,’ he said.
‘We probably gave them their two-goal lead a bit easily and didn’t really make them earn it although, with the attacking options we have, we never felt out of the game.
‘But fair play to Billericay because they closed the game down excellently in the second half after we got our goal and those are the tactics we are going to have to get used to at this level of football.’
