Simpson slips three places in rankings

AS HE had predicted, Chris Simpson dropped a few places when the new PSA world rankings came out yesterday.
The Guernsey player is now 24th having hit a career high of 21st last month, but the drop of three places is better than he thought it might be in the week when he was ‘absolutely gutted’ to have lost an epic five-game thriller to one of the top 10 players in the world in the biggest tournament in the calendar.
‘So close, yet so far,’ he reflected yesterday on his 11-9, 6-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5 defeat to Borja Golan at the AJ Bell World Squash Championship in Manchester.
‘But then again I did play well, so hopefully if I’m at that level consistently then I can get some big scalps.
‘He’s just gone to No. 8 in the world,’ the Guernseyman added of his Spanish opponent, who started the week ninth.
Simpson’s next major event is next week’s Qatar Classic, a PSA World Series Platinum tournament in which he will have to come through qualifying to reach the main draw.
