THERE were mixed fortunes for the island’s footballers on Saturday as Guernsey FC picked up three vital points, but the defence of the FA Inter-League Cup ended at the first hurdle.

A 1-0 defeat against the Devon and Exeter League for Steve Ogier’s side in the first round down in the south-west ends Sarnian hopes of competing in European competition again.

The majority of the winning squad from 2010 are now plying their trade for the Green Lions and they overcame a late scare to defeat Bookham 3-2 up in Dorking and bounce back from last weekend’s defeat.

Leading 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Joe Alvarez, Luke Winch and Sam Cochrane, they were nearly shocked when 80th and 89th minute strikes from David Fuller and Nick Kemble made it a frantic finale.
