TWO island records were broken yesterday morning as Ian Powell and Tom Hollingsworth showed top form at the British Gas ASA National Championships.

Hollingsworth erased his previous Guernsey long-course best for 50m breaststroke with a swim of 30.36sec. at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Later on in the morning session, Powell broke his own island 100m backstroke record, clocking 57.17 to finish seventh quickest in the heats and earn a place in last night’s final where he placed eighth and last in a time of 57.42sec., 0.28 slower than his semi-final effort.

It was Powell’s second final appearance of the week, having made the top eight in the 100m butterfly.
