ON A misty, wet and windy morning, the Guernsey Velo Club had a surprisingly fast race, with a close and exciting sprint to decide the winner of the Liberation Day Trophy.

ANN BOWDITCH claimed first place in yesterday’s concluding Black Horse 25-mile Handicap Time Trial, but it was her protege, James McLaughlin, who won the overall classification in the Guernsey Velo Club’s Four-Day Easter Cycle Race.

IT WAS a shade before two o’clock on day one when David Harry, the Guernsey Velo Club stalwart, made the following delighted observation: ‘We’ve been going eight hours, four gold medals have been up to be won and we [Guernsey] have won them all.’

GUERNSEY’S cyclists did themselves proud again as they battled the  heat and a home-straight head wind to all finish in the top 30 of the  individual time trials.

JAMES McLAUGHLIN underlined his emergence as a cyclist of huge potential with a superb 20th place finish in yesterday’s gruelling 168 kilometre road race.
